Gender im Klassenzimmer: Wie gehen wir damit um?

Gender in the German language is a complicated topic with several layers. In German, there is what is called “grammatical gender,” which is often confusingly combined with human genders. Nowadays, there are big political debates about gender in society and several German learners identify as trans or non-binary. As teachers, we have a responsibility to be active in addressing this topic in the classroom. 

Overall, participants of this workshop will get an overview of the current state of gender-inclusive and gender-neutral language in German and also practical tips for how to best discuss this topic. They will examine tasks directly from the classroom and reflect on their own pedagogy in small groups. After the workshop, they should not only have created new materials for the classroom, but also have a wealth of resources on this topic at their fingertips. Resources for all language levels (from young children or beginners to advanced German speakers) will be presented and everyone is welcome to join the workshop.

About the speaker
Dr. Claire E. Scott is a senior lecturer in German Language at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. They hold a PhD from the Carolina-Duke Graduate Program in German Studies, with a certificate in Feminist Studies. She is interested in 20th and 21st century theater, literature, and film, and her first book, Murderous Mothers: Late Twentieth-Century Medea Figures and Feminism, was published this year by Peter Lang.

There is no fee to attend the workshop. Beverages, refreshments and lunch will be provided.
