Presentation at 11 a.m: Daniel J. Hoisington, Historian

Join us at GAI Café for a special presentation by historian Daniel J. Hoisington, Gut Heil! New Ulm as an Intentional Community.”

Discover how a bold vision shaped one of Minnesota’s most distinctive communities. This engaging presentation explores the story of the German Turners, politically progressive immigrants who brought with them ideals of physical fitness, education, freethought, and civic engagement. Hoisington traces how these values influenced the founding and development of New Ulm, from its city design and educational institutions to its rich cultural life and enduring community spirit.

From revolution in Europe to reinvention on the Minnesota frontier, this is the story of a town built not only with bricks and mortar, but with purpose and ideals.

Daniel J. Hoisington serves as National Historian for the American Turners and is President of the Board of Directors of the New Ulm Turnverein. He is the author of three books on New Ulm history, including A German Town: A History of New Ulm, Minnesota. In partnership with the Brown County Historical Society, he also developed the award-winning exhibits Never Shall I Forget: Brown County and the U.S.-Dakota War and Loyalty and Dissent: Brown County and WWI.
